about

In April of 2010, Secret Stash Records traveled to Lima, Peru to record Afro Peruvian music. With a portable recording studio, an interpreter, and no preplanned engagements or sessions they hit the streets. Within one week’s time they put together a band they called Peña and recorded over 50 tracks. The cast of musicians was a revolving door of sorts. This self titled release highlights the best recordings from those sessions. In addition to hours of audio recording, they filmed the entire adventure in HD. This CD+DVD package contains interviews, live performances, session footage and more.

About Afro Peruvian Music

Afro-Peruvian music was born directly out of the slave culture of costal Peru. Each style or form of the genre reflects a different aspect of the life of slavery. Unfortunately, the music sort of withered away and practically disappeared over time. It wasn’t until the 1950s that a small group of people in the village of El Carmen began reviving Afro-Peruvian culture and music. Over the following decades, Afro-Peruvian music began to thrive on a much larger scale. Eventually Lima became the epicenter of its rediscovery. Unfortunately, outside of Peru, this music has received very little recognition or notoriety. Only a very small handful of Afro-Peruvian records are even available abroad.
